The Paper Brigade was a group of 40 Jewish poets, writers and intellectuals who during the Nazi occupation of Vilna (now Vilnius), Lithuania, risked their lives to save the city’s Jewish library collections from destruction in Poland, Belarus and Russia.
From September 1941 to September 1943, the Nazis forced them to participate in the spoliation of the prestigious Jewish and non-Jewish libraries in the city of Vilnius. For this reason, the ghetto gave them the nickname of “paper brigade”. At the risk of their lives, however, they succeeded in hiding tens of thousands of precious works coveted by their “employers”.
